This monograph began with a simple observation.
Across families, schools, healthcare, organizations, courts, and governments, remarkably similar supervisory belief–behavior systems repeatedly emerge.
Some supervisory relationships encourage questioning, transparency, collaboration, continual learning, and shared responsibility.
Others increasingly promote conformity, censorship, coercion, and preservation of existing assumptions.
For generations these recurring patterns have been described from many different perspectives.
Leadership theories have classified styles.
Psychologists have examined cognition and behavior.
Organizational scholars have investigated culture and learning.
Political theorists have debated democracy and authority.
Legal scholars have explored justice and due process.
Educators have studied effective teaching.
Healthcare researchers have examined clinical supervision.
Each discipline has illuminated an important part of the phenomenon.
The question guiding this investigation was whether these recurring patterns might arise from a common underlying mechanism.
The Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype proposes that they do.
