Investigating the cognitive and epistemological foundations of continued learning within human hierarchies.

Mihal Emberton, MD, MPH, MS, is a physician, educator, author, and independent interdisciplinary scholar whose research investigates how human hierarchies preserve—or impede—the capacity to recognize and correct error through continued learning.

Although informed by experience across multiple professional disciplines, the research developed through an intentionally interdisciplinary synthesis of concepts from organizational learning, psychology, education, healthcare, leadership, epistemology, systems thinking, law, public administration, democratic governance, and evolutionary science.

Developed through more than two decades of professional practice, teaching, leadership, and scholarship, this work culminated in the Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype (BBSA)—a proposed interdisciplinary explanatory architecture for investigating how supervisory intention and unconscious epistemological belief influence whether the intellectual and organizational resources distributed throughout human hierarchies become effectively integrated for continued learning or remain separated.

At the center of the framework is a proposed model of supervisory cognition arising through the interaction of two independent components: underlying intention and unconscious epistemological belief. Their interaction is proposed to give rise to recurring democratic, autocratic, manipulative, and exploitative supervisory belief–behavior systems.

The research program invites continued empirical investigation, measurement development, refinement, replication, and interdisciplinary collaboration to examine whether these proposed relationships can be observed across different human hierarchies and whether supervisory cognition can itself become an object of continued learning.


The Scientific Question

The Problem That Began the Investigation

For more than two decades, my research has been guided by a fundamental problem:

How do human hierarchies continue learning when the resources necessary for learning become distributed across supervisory relationships, and what role does supervisory cognition play in determining whether those resources become effectively integrated?

The question emerged from a simple observation.

Individual human beings generally possess or directly access many of the resources necessary for their own learning. They can observe a problem, draw upon experience, question an explanation, devote attention to alternatives, test new understanding, and change their behavior in response to what they learn.

Human hierarchies are different.

Their extraordinary collective capacity arises precisely because knowledge, expertise, responsibility, authority, and other resources are distributed among different people. Those closest to emerging problems may possess observations, experience, questions, disagreement, alternative explanations, and corrective information, while supervisors may control the authority, time, funding, priority, personnel, and capacity for action necessary to investigate or act upon that knowledge.

The structure that makes specialization and collective problem solving possible therefore also creates a fundamental dependency: continued learning requires distributed intellectual and organizational resources to become effectively integrated.

That structural problem ultimately led to a more specific scientific question:

What underlying cognitive and epistemological mechanism gives rise to supervisory belief–behavior systems across human hierarchies?


The Research Program

Following the Questions

Rather than beginning with a predetermined theory of leadership or management, my research sought to understand how learning itself changes when knowledge, expertise, authority, and other resources become distributed among different people.

The investigation progressed from the structural distribution of learning resources, to the hierarchical insulation of unconscious cognitive error, to supervisory and subordinate adaptation and organizational knowledge flow, and ultimately to the cognitive and epistemological processes proposed to underlie recurring supervisory belief–behavior systems.

Each stage answered one question while revealing another.

The mature framework returns to the structural problem from which the investigation began. It proposes supervisory cognition as an integrative mechanism influencing whether distributed intellectual and organizational resources become effectively connected for continued learning or remain separated.

The research therefore closes an explanatory loop:

Human hierarchies expand humanity's capacity for collective learning by distributing the resources necessary for learning. Supervisory cognition influences whether those distributed resources are brought back together.

Today, the research program encompasses three peer-reviewed publications, the Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype as an evolving interdisciplinary conceptual framework, visual syntheses of its proposed architecture, and a scholarly monograph investigating its broader implications for human learning and adaptation.


A Philosophy of Scientific Inquiry

Searching for the Rule Behind the Pattern

The research program has been guided by a simple philosophy of scientific inquiry: recurring patterns invite explanation.

When similar supervisory patterns emerge across otherwise different human hierarchies, the recurrence itself raises a question. Rather than treating each manifestation as an isolated problem of personality, leadership style, management technique, organizational culture, or institutional structure, the investigation asks whether a more fundamental explanatory rule might account for what these patterns share.

That approach requires moving between observation and explanation.

Human beings recognize recurring patterns, develop explanatory rules, compare those explanations with new observations, discover inconsistencies, and refine understanding. Because every explanation remains potentially incomplete, scientific progress depends not only upon developing explanations, but upon preserving the capacity to discover when those explanations are wrong.

This principle also informs the BBSA itself.

The framework proposes that epistemological humility—the recognition that one's present understanding may be incomplete—helps preserve questioning, corrective information, alternative explanations, and continued learning. Epistemological certainty may instead make existing assumptions increasingly resistant to correction.

The same standard must therefore apply to the framework.

The Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype is not presented as a final explanation. It is a proposed conceptual architecture intended to generate questions, testable propositions, measurement strategies, criticism, refinement, and continued empirical investigation.

A theory concerned with preserving the capacity to recognize error must itself remain open to correction


From Professional Experience to Interdisciplinary Inquiry

My professional experience has crossed settings in which learning, uncertainty, expertise, responsibility, and authority continually intersect.

Medicine requires decisions under conditions of incomplete knowledge. Education depends upon creating conditions in which understanding can change. Leadership requires exercising responsibility while remaining responsive to knowledge distributed among others. Law and public institutions confront the consequences of exercising authority when human judgment remains fallible.

Across these settings, the same underlying problem repeatedly emerges:

How can authority be exercised without separating a hierarchy from the knowledge necessary to recognize when its existing understanding is wrong?

That question gradually transformed what began as an investigation of organizational learning into a broader inquiry into human cognition, supervisory relationships, knowledge flow, institutional learning, and the conditions that allow human hierarchies to remain adaptive.

The interdisciplinary character of the research is therefore not incidental. The same cognitive and epistemological problem may appear wherever one person exercises authority over and responsibility to another while knowledge remains distributed between them.


Independent Scholarship

The Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype research program has been developed through independent, self-directed interdisciplinary scholarship.

This independence has allowed the investigation to follow scientific questions across conventional disciplinary boundaries—from organizational learning and human cognition to supervisory systems, epistemology, justice, democratic institutions, and evolutionary science.

It also makes continued external evaluation especially important.

The next stage of the research depends upon interdisciplinary engagement: testing the proposed constructs, developing and validating measures, examining alternative explanations, evaluating relationships across different hierarchical contexts, and determining whether interventions intended to strengthen epistemological humility and the integration of distributed learning resources produce measurable effects.

The objective is not to preserve the framework.

The objective is to improve the explanation.


Continuing the Investigation

Human beings will always make mistakes.

Our explanations will remain incomplete. New observations will challenge existing assumptions. Changing environments will create problems that established knowledge cannot fully anticipate.

The adaptive challenge is therefore not to eliminate cognitive error, but to preserve our capacity to recognize and correct it.

Human hierarchies make that challenge more difficult because the knowledge capable of revealing an error may reside with someone other than the person who possesses the authority and resources necessary to respond to it. Yet those same hierarchies give humanity extraordinary capacity for specialization, cooperation, collective problem solving, and learning.

Understanding how to preserve that capacity is the continuing scientific problem.

The Belief–Behavior Systems Archetype is ultimately an investigation into one of humanity's most fundamental challenges: preserving the capacity to recognize and correct error through continued learning.
